Three communities of company built homes comprised the core of Kyrock: Ridgedale, Woodside, and Blue Town though others were built on River Row and Pigeon Creek.
Though having much in common this article is specifically about Ridgedale and thanks to Pearlie Mae York who grew up there for sharing memories.
The homes were constructed of a tar paper like material and were all the company color dark green.
They were 3 or 4 rooms which meant kitchen, living room (which doubled as bedroom) and 1 or 2 bedrooms.
Each house had running water from a faucet in the yard. They cooked and heated with coal that was mined and delivered by the company, Kentucky Rock.
The houses had 3 doors, 2 in the front and 1 in the back. They had electricity and that was a single light in each room.
It’s thought the company carpenters built about 150 of them for employees and families.
Residents paid rent and that included the house, medical care (doctor), commissary privileges, and utilities. They paid no rent during winter months when the asphalt plant and quarries didn’t operate.
